Open Days of Geotechnics – Secondary School of Civil Engineering School in Rijeka, May 2022
Quality education is a fundamental part of all social activities and it reflects the values of society. To ensure a prosperous future for young people, the whole community must invest in knowledge. The key to the success of any modern society is to connect the education and higher education system with the labor market and the economy. Schools, colleges and faculties as social institutions play an important role in the modern society that strives to be a society of knowledge.
Today, the cooperation of universities and companies is extremely important because it allows students to graduate from college or high school equipped with applicable knowledge and skills that they will need to integrate better into the real economy sector.
With the aim of connecting with the economy, the institutions and other legal entities from the region, many companies are becoming part of the scientific, scientific-educational and professional base of the University of Rijeka. This way, they can invite students to learn and gain practical experience in their companies. As part of this base of the University of Rijeka, we are happy to participate in university projects and demonstrate our way of working to try and encourage young people to pursue an education in geotechnical engineering.
Every year we take an active part in the student case study competition Realizator, which is designed to give students the opportunity to turn their lessons into practice and develop specific skills needed in the labor market by working on real business cases. The Realizator competition encourages creativity and innovation in students through practical experience, provides them with education and professional support, and helps them meet with potential employers.
In cooperation with the University of Rijeka Foundation, we act as a partner company in the Transfer znanja project, with the aim of identifying and rewarding examples of best practice – successful transfers of knowledge from the University of Rijeka to the business and wider community.
In the scope of the Open Days and the Festival of Science at the Faculty of Civil Engineering in Rijeka, we are taking part in the program of scientific lectures and striving to contribute to the development of student knowledge and competencies. To transfer our knowledge and experience to high school graduates and introduce students to geotechnics, we organized the first Open Days of Geotechnics 2022 in cooperation with the company Rijekaprojekt – geotehničko istraživanje d.o.o. at the Secondary School of Civil Engineering in Rijeka. Students had the opportunity to see how geotechnical investigation and testing is conducted in practice at six info points.
Engineering geology, geophysical investigation, and geotechnical exploratory drilling are just some of the topics that the graduates of the Secondary School of Civil Engineering had the opportunity to get acquainted with.
The students were happy to participate in the presentation and showed great interest in geotechnical investigation and testing.
The exploratory drilling machine that the company Rijekaprojekt – geotehničko istraživanje d.o.o. exhibited in the school yard with the professional support of engineers drew a lot of attention.
The presentation was very interesting and educational, graduates of the Secondary School of Civil Engineering had a lot to learn about geotechnics and its practical application.
We are happy that the Secondary School of Civil Engineering in Rijeka recognized the potential of this project, aimed at motivating and encouraging future college students to invest in knowledge and start building their own careers.
